A fire drill is held at all sites every year. As well as being an opportunity to test all procedures, these fire drills enable our employees to refresh their knowledge of the fire safety instructions.The persons responsible for safety and the employees responsible for first aid follow regular courses to brush up and improve their knowledge and skills.
In 2016 there were five occupational accidents at work in Belgium, as well as three accidents on the way to and from work. Although these were mainly very minor incidents, all accidents and near-accidents were thoroughly investigated by the risk prevention advisor. Where necessary, adaptations were made to our risk prevention policy, the use of personal protective equipment (such as safety boots and auditory protection) and employee training.
Safety is an issue that is given daily attention. The prevention advisor holds 'safety talks' with employees every week to discuss any accidents and near-accidents with employees and focus attention on the specific safety risks in their work..
25% of work-related accidents are traffic accidents. That is why we are concerned about safe transport to and from work. We offer free bikes for an easy commute from and to the train station nearby. A repair service is also available. In addition, we conduct skid trainings for the sales teams who are often on the road.
We promote a good working posture: one which does not strain the body. After a research conducted by an ergonomist of the external medical service, new chairs were installed in the sewing workshop. Working tables and their layout were improved in the Quality Control department.
Employees can stay in shape by participating in collective and guided sport activities, such as running sessions, which take place weekly.
We tackle absenteeism. With our prevention adviser, P&O-employees and members of the CPBW (translated: Committee for Prevention and Protection at Work), the working group Vitality sets out the framework of the policy and monitors the implementation. The objective is to prevent frequent and prolonged absences. At least twice a year, P&O reviews the absenteeism figures with the managers. These figures form the basis for action plans proposed by P&O. When an employee goes back to work after a long period of absence, we consult the employee, the manager, the external medical service and possibly the treating physician and we propose a reintegration plan. In addition, projects on ergonomics and manageable work are carried out in the Company.
By informing managers about issues of health, stress and burnout, we reinforce the collective care responsibility and we pick up on early signals. This helps us in reassuring our employees and keeping them motivated.
In a culture of trust and responsibility, with a focus on coaching rather than control, a punch clock has little place. It’s only used only in the production areas. But also there, employees can flexibly manage their working hours, as long as the job content makes it possible.
When possible we offer our employees the flexibility to work at home. The obligation of results prevails over that of means.
